CampbellStadium.jpgWhen asked who on our team would be interested in blogging for College Baseball Daily, I was quick to jump at the opportunity. My name is Drew Butler (Rockingham, N.C.) and I am a sophomore third basemen from Campbell University in Buies Creek, N.C. I am happy to chronicle the journey of a smaller D-1 program beginning to make a name in college baseball.

I grew up playing baseball about an hour and a half away from “The Creek”. I love baseball. That seems as if it would be an obvious statement made from a college baseball player; however, my love for this game goes way deeper than most would imagine. I’ve played my entire life and have never been one to dread the process of being a ball player. When I say dread I mean The Grind.

The Grind is long practices in ninety degree weather along with the long days of conditioning in the “I can see my breath” weather. The Grind is practice followed by intense workouts in the weight room. The grind is running sprints and miles. The Grind is taking so many swings you have callouses on your hands. The Grind is following all of that with the studying that is just as important for a college athlete. Fall practice is all about the Grind.

I want, by the last inning I ever play, to be able to say I gave this game my all and did not take anything for granted. So, when I heard that I could possibly have the opportunity to write about this game and the experience I am having as a Fighting Camel, I knew it was just another way I could give to this game and show my love for it.

I am aware that Campbell University is not the most well-known baseball college. Hopefully, because of the past three seasons, we will begin to become that household name. From one on the outside looking in, it may not seem to be much at all. Yes, it is a smaller school but the improvements, progress, and successes from the past few years, academically and athletically, show the wondrous potential of Camel Baseball. I am excited to showcase Campbell University and our journey to Omaha. I look forward to giving you a sneak peek into the Creek.
