HIGH POINT, N.C. – High Point University baseball head coach Craig Cozart announced the team’s schedule for the upcoming 2015 season on Tuesday. High Point will face a challenging slate of non-conference opponents that includes the College of Charleston, South Florida, North Carolina, Elon and Davidson.
“We have once again put together a challenging schedule for our team this season,” head coach Craig Cozart said. “We have several quality home series and two very challenging road series at the College of Charleston and South Florida. Our midweek schedule will once again be filled with talented teams from the ACC, the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, the CAA and the SoCon. Our conference slate will provide us with a great test as we prepare for the Big South Tournament. We are looking forward to a tremendous year and are optimistic about our opportunities.”
The Panthers open the season on Friday, Feb. 13, with an unconventional three-game weekend series against UNCG. The two teams will play in Greensboro on Friday, in High Point on Saturday and back in Greensboro on Sunday.
High Point will host two non-conference weekend series in 2015 as the team will welcome Dayton for a three-game series beginning on Feb. 20 and LIU-Brooklyn beginning on March 6. The Panthers took two out three games against Dayton in a home series back in 2012 and HPU swept the Blackbirds at Williard when the two teams last met back in 2013.
HPU will head south for both of its road series during non-conference play, travelling to Tampa, Florida to face South Florida beginning on Feb. 27 and to Charleston, South Carolina to play three against the College of Charleston beginning on March 13. The Cougars won 44 games in 2014 and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals.
The Panthers will take advantage of the wealth of quality programs in the Carolinas during the midweek portion of the schedule. High Point will play home-and-home against Elon, Appalachian State, Davidson, Wake Forest and North Carolina A&T. The team will also play road games at North Carolina, Charlotte and East Carolina.
With VMI departing the Big South this season, the conference has gone away from the division format of the past two seasons. High Point will host Campbell, Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian College and UNC Asheville in home conference series this season and will travel to face Longwood, Winthrop, Radford and Liberty.
The 2015 Big South Baseball Championship will be hosted by Gardner-Webb beginning on May 19 in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. It will mark the first time since 2011 that HPU has played in Boiling Springs.
High Point returns 23 letter winners, including seven of eight position starters and five of its top seven pitchers, from a team that set an HPU Div. I record with 33 wins in 2014. All-Conference selections Spencer Angelis, Dane McDermott, Josh Spano, John McGillicuddy and Josh Greene all return for HPU in 2015 along with Freshman All-American Cas Silber. The Panthers also welcome a talented group of 14 newcomers to the roster.
