ASULogoArizona State opened up fall practice on Monday under new head coach Tracy Smith. Jeff Metcalfe of AZCentral.com has a fantastic feature on Smith and the 2015 squad.

Watching new Arizona State baseball coach Tracy Smith quiz his players on signals to conclude the opening fall practice Monday reminded me why I always say athletes are under appreciated for their sports IQ.

There were a couple of mistakes, adding up to two laps around Packard Stadium as a penalty, but for the most part the Sun Devils already have a decent grasp on the signals they must understand to be successful at the plate (or at least keep Smith and his staff happy).

At Indiana, Smith’s previous job, fall practice would be completed by now and not just beginning. That was the starting point for our post-practice conversation.
