UConn number 1 pitcher Carson Cross missed the 2014 season after suffering an injury while playing intramural football to his pitching arm.

In 2012, Cross had a 1.21 ERA in 18 games, mostly in relief as a freshman. In 2013, Carson became the top starter with a 9-4 record and 2.44 ERA, as UConn won the Big East tournament, and he allowed one run in 6 1/3 innings as the Huskies defeated host Virginia Tech in the first game of the NCAA Regionals. Cross was drafted by the Pirates in the 24th round in 2013 but turned down a six-figure offer to return to UConn for one more year.

But, instead, his arm was in a sling, and two MRIs indicated damage to his rotator cuff. When Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery on Feb. 19, the news was much better. It was scar tissue, which could be removed.

“All it was, was a bunch of scar tissue built up,” Cross said. “They were able to go in with just three [arthro]scope holes and clean it up.”

The scar tissue came from a combination of playing football from sixth grade through high school, as well as pitching, and the onset of stiffness and discomfort cold have come at any time, Cross was told.
