OMAHA, Neb. — Texas (46-20) lives to play at least one more day after a 4-0 victory over Vanderbilt (48-20) Friday afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park.
The Longhorns’ win sets up a winner-takes-all matchup between the same two teams tomorrow with a chance to advance to the 2014 College World Series championship series.
Texas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a liner that hit an umpire rather than going for a potential inning-ending double play. The next inning, the Longhorns added two more runs and rode Nathan Thornhill to a terrific eight-inning, zero-run, 131-pitch performance.
Senior centerfielder Mark Payton was on first base when the line drive that hit the umpire in front of Vanderbilt second baseman Dansby Swanson.
After the game, Payton talked about what he saw while running to second base on the momentum-swinging line drive and how the biggest boost came from the two-run second inning.
Mark Payton also discusses how Texas head coach Augie Garrido is a “wizard” and how the Longhorns are trying to keep the momentum going throughout the week.
