Corey Miller pitches.Pepperdine 3, Arizona State 2

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Arizona State couldn’t recover from an early 3-0 deficit after ace Brett Lilek left 15 pitches into his start after injuring his sternum.

The Pepperdine Waves scored a run off Lilek and two off Seth Martinez before he settled into a groove and held on for a 3-2 victory in the opening game of the San Luis Obispo Regional Friday afternoon at Baggett Stadium.

Austin Davidson’s two-run double in the second inning put the Waves ahead 3-0 and that proved to be enough.

Arizona State got a homer from Trever Allen in the second inning and an RBI single from Nathaniel Causey in the fourth inning, but could get nothing else off Corey Miller (7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 4 K) and the combined relief efforts of Chandler Blanchard and Eric Karch.

Seth Martinez allowed three hits and two earned runs in 6.1 innings of strong relief that included him sitting down 16 straight at one point.

Cal Poly 4, Sacramento State 2

Cal Poly tags out Kyle Moses.SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly jumped on Sacramento State freshman starter Sam Long for four runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 4-2 victory in the opening round of the San Luis Obispo Regional.
The Mustangs (46-10) scored singled runs in the second and third innings and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead and the combination of Matt Imhof (7.2 IP, 3 H, ER) and Reed Reilly did the rest Friday night at Baggett Stadium.

Sacramento State (39-23) got on the board with two runs in the eighth inning, but could have done much more damage after loading the bases with no outs. But the Hornets grounded into a double play the drastically diminished the threat level.

No. 9 hitter John Schucknecht led the way for Cal Poly going 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI triple. Mark Mathias was 2-for-4 and drove in Schucknecht twice.

The Hornets managed only three hits in the game with two of those via No. 9 hitter Scott Loper.
