2014 Gainesville Regional: Day 1 Recap

Long Beach State 6 UNC 1

Gainesville, Fla. – Andrew Rohrbachturned away both the heat and the Tar Heels in a masterful performance, pitching 8.1 innings and allowing just one run as the Dirtbags opened up the 2014 postseason with a 6-1 win over North Carolina.

Both starters cruised for three innings, but Long Beach State broke the game open in the fourth inning. Garrett Hampsongot the action started by beating out an infield single for the first hit of the game, and the dam broke.

Hampson moved to second a wild pitch, was advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on an RBI single by Richard Prigatano. Prigatano then stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored after a walk to Michael Hill on a single from Johnny Bekakis.

College of Charleston 3 Florida 2

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – College of Charleston (42-17) scored three runs in the first inning and then held on to a 3-2 win over No. 8 Florida (40-22) to advance in the winner’s bracket of the NCAA Gainesville Regional.

The Gators were the No. 2 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and ranked eighth in the Coaches Poll heading into Friday night. It marked the fourth time in CofC’s six NCAA trips that College of Charleston has won the first game of a regional, although it was Charleston’s first time doing it as a four seed against the host.

The red-hot Cougars have won four games in a row and 11 of the last 13 after sweeping through the CAA conference tournament.
