2014 Bloomington Regional: Day 2 Recap

Bloomington, Ind. — Youngstown State fifth-year senior Patrick O’Brien pitched 6.1 strong innings, and the Penguins beat Indiana State 5-2 for the program’s first victory in the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon in the Bloomington Regional.

YSU (17-37) will advance to play at 1 p.m. on Sunday against the loser of Saturday night’s game between Stanford and Indiana. Indiana State, which entered the tournament ranked 21st in the RPI, finishes the season 35-18.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana’s (44-13) Sam Travis hit a home run and Joey DeNato pitched 7.1 strong innings as the top seed in the NCAA Bloomington Regional topped third-seeded Stanford (31-24) on Saturday night at Bart Kaufman Field, 4-2.

DeNato improved to 13-1 on the year, setting a new IU record for most wins by a pitcher in a single season. He also is now the school’s single-season leader in innings pitched with 109.0. The San Diego, Calif., native gave up two earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters.

Travis was 3-for-5 on the night with two RBI, including his solo home run in the fifth. He now has 12 home runs and a team-leading 57 RBI this year.
