College Baseball Daily continues our countdown to the start of the 2014 college baseball season by checking in on the Top 100 Players in the country. We will be adding players day-by-day until we get to number one!
Number 28 on our countdown is junior RHP Chad Sobotka from South Carolina-Upstate. The 6’6 righty was a four year letter winner at Riverview High School. As a senior, he went 4-2 with a 3.20 ERA with him named the team’s MVP.
His freshman season with the Spartans saw him work out of the bullpen in all of his 25 appearances. He finished the year with a 3-0 record and an ERA of 1.72 while picking up 12 saves in 31.1 innings of work as he became the premier closer for the Spartans. He picked up several awards including being named to Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Honors, and NCBWA Freshman All-American.
His sophomore season saw his stats drop off a little with a record of 1-5 in 37.1 innings while picking up seven saves in 26 games. His 3.86 ERA helped him to be named to the All-Atlantic Sun second team.
He spent the summer in the Cape Cod Baseball League with the Hyannis Harbor Hawks as he made 16 appearances with a 2-1 record while having a 1.95 ERA. He struck out 30 batters in the 27.2 innings he pitched in.
