We continue the countdown today with number 45, Louisville RHP Kyle Funkhouser. In his freshman campaign with the Cardinals, Funkhouser quickly became one of the elite pitchers in the Big East. The 6’2” right-hander was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American after going 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA. In 54.2 innings pitched, Funkhouser made a total of 22 appearances on the mound, including six starts collecting 54 strikeouts in the process.
The Oak Forest, Ill native attended Oak Forest High School where was a three-year letter-winner and was ranked among the Top 200 players in the nation by Perfect Game. Funkhouser holds school records in career wins, strikeouts, ERA and innings pitched which led to a First Team All-State selection twice. The 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year finished 11-2 with a 0.65 ERA and 132 strikeouts as a senior before deciding to take his talents to Louisville.
During the 2013 summer, Funkhouser had the opportunity to compete in the prestigious Cape Cod League as a member of the Chatham Anglers. While with the Anglers, Funkhouser totalled 16 innings pitched between the regular and post season. During the regular season the right-hander posted a 4.15 ERA in 10 games while racking up 21 strikeouts and four saves. The rising sophomore returns to Louisville for his much anticipated 2014 season as the sky seems to be the limit for Funkhouser.
