CONWAY – The Coastal Carolina baseball program, one of just 11 schools to play in an NCAA Regional every year since 2007, released its 2014 schedule today. Coastal will play 30 home games and once again call TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark home as the University’s new baseball stadium is being completed.
As usual, the Chanticleer schedule features competitive home tournaments to start the year, tough midweek games versus perennial NCAA Regional competition and a weekend series at an Atlantic Coast Conference member. However, one of the key matchups will come March 26 when Coastal Carolina travels to Columbia to face South Carolina. While the two squads met in the 2010 Myrtle Beach Super Regional and Coastal played in the 2012 Columbia Regional, this will mark Coastal’s first trip to South Carolina since 2001.
For the second consecutive season, the Chanticleers will open the season Feb. 14 at Francis Marion’s Sparrow Stadium, hosting newest ACC member Pittsburgh. The teams will complete the three-game series at Myrtle Beach (Feb. 15-16).
Coastal will then host the 15th annual Caravelle Resort’s Baseball at the Beach (Feb. 20-24), featuring George Mason, Illinois, Wichita State and Connecticut. The following weekend (Feb. 28-Mar. 2) will be the Caravelle Resort Tournament with James Madison, Marshall, Rhode Island, West Virginia and Duke.
After a midweek trip to The Citadel (Mar. 4), Coastal will host its final tournament of the season – the Chanticleer Classic Mar. 7-9 with UMBC, UNC Greensboro, Elon and Minnesota. Coastal will welcome ACC foe Wake Forest on Mar. 11 before hitting the road for the start of Big South play at High Point (Mar. 14-16).
The Chants will then play seven of its next eight at home – the lone road game being a trip to South Carolina.
Starting April 2, 20 of CCU’s 24 games will be on the road, including UNC Wilmington (April 2), UNC Asheville (April 4-6), North Carolina (April 9), Radford (April 11-13), Clemson (April 15), Gardner-Webb (April 25-27), Elon (April 29), North Carolina State (May 2-4), Liberty (May 9-11) and College of College of Charleston (May 13).
Coastal will close the regular season with a three-game series versus Campbell (May 15-17). The Big South Tournament will be held May 20-24 at Winthrop.
