We continue the countdown today with number 71, William & Mary RHP Mitchell Aker. In his freshman campaign with the Tribe, Aker made 24 relief appearances while compiling a 1-1 record and posting a 5.26 ERA. The right-hander worked in 25.2 innings in his first college season and racked up 19 strikeouts in the process. Aker also finished the Tribe season with 5 saves which was good for second on the staff.
The Arlington, VA native attended Paul VI Catholic where he was a three-year letter winner under head coach Bill Emerson. During his High School career, the 6’2” pitcher earned Perfect Game First-Team All-Region as well as Perfect Game All-American honors. Aker also played travel baseball for the NVTBL Prospect All-Stars before signing with the Tribe in the Colonial Athletic Association.
During the 2013 summer, Aker spent his time in the Cal Ripken League as a member of the Alexandria Aces. He was named the fourth best prospect in the CRL after a dominant summer on the mound. The right-hander appeared in seven games with six starts for the Aces and finished 3-3 in 26.1 IP with 24 K’s. His efforts helped guide the Aces to a CRL playoff berth.
William and Mary won a school record 39 games in 2013, earning the school’s first ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Aker returns to the Tribe for his sophomore season and will look to make a big impact out of the bullpen in 2014.
