MONROE, La. — ULM head baseball coach Jeff Schexnaider announced today the 2014 baseball schedule that features a total of 56 games including home contests against Michigan State, Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Miss, all of which won 30 or more games a season ago.
In all, ULM will face six different teams that advanced to the NCAA Regionals in 2013 (Baton Rouge, La. Regional – Jackson State and UL-Lafayette; Raleigh, N.C. Regional – Ole Miss; Starkville, Miss. Regional – South Alabama; Tallahassee, Fla. Regional – Alabama and Troy). The Warhawks will face a total of 12 teams that won 30 or more games last season.
The Warhawks will kickoff the season on Friday, Feb. 14 as they welcome Grand Canyon to Warhawk Field for a three-game series. Grand Canyon, a new Western Athletic Conference member, is in its first year of transistional play from Division II to Division I.
ULM will host Southern Miss in its first midweek game of the 2014 season. The Warhawks and the Golden Eagles will tangle at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
The squad will make its first road trip of the season to south Louisiana as it takes part in the four-day Nicholls State Tournament. During its trip to Thibodaux (Feb. 20-23), ULM will face Nicholls State, Southern Illinois and Western Illinois (twice).
After a pair of games at Ole Miss (Feb. 25-26), ULM will return home to Monroe as eight of its next 12 games are at home. The Warhawks will welcome Southeastern Louisiana (Feb. 28 – Mar. 2) and Michigan State (Mar. 5) to Warhawk Field, before making their way to the state of Alabama for the first time in 2014 as the club plays a three-game series at Samford (Mar. 7-9). After a midweek home-and-home series with Jackson State (Mar. 11-12), the Warhawks will open Sun Belt Conference play with a three-game series against UL-Lafayette in Monroe (Mar. 14-16).
ULM will close out the month of March with road trips to Southern Miss (Mar. 18) and Troy (Mar. 20-22), before entertaining UALR (Mar. 28-30).
Coach Schexnaider’s team will open the month of April with a road trip to Alabama (Apr. 1), followed by a home tilt against Nicholls State (Apr. 2). ULM’s next two conference series will feature games against SBC newcomers UT Arlington (Apr. 4-6; Arlington, Texas) and Texas State (Apr. 11-13; Warhawk Field). Sandwiched between the two series against the two Texas schools are home games against Northwestern State (Apr. 8) and FIU (Apr. 9).
Seven of the next eight games for ULM will be on the road including six league games. ULM will travel to Northwestern State (Apr. 15), followed by conference series at Arkansas State (Apr. 18-20) and at South Alabama (Apr. 25-27). The lone home contest during the eight-game stretch is against Grambling State (Apr. 23), which will be the last non-conference game of the season for the Warhawks.
ULM will face Western Kentucky (May 2-4) and SBC newcomer Georgia State (May 9-11) at Warhawk Field before closing out the 2014 regular season at UL-Lafayette (May 15-17).
The 2014 SBC Tournament will be held at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala., from May 21-25, with the tournament champion earning the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Baseball Championship that starts with regional play onMay 30.
