CHAPEL HILL — The University of North Carolina baseball team will host 37 games at Boshamer Stadium and play 20 games against teams that reached last season’s NCAA Championship as part of its 2014 schedule, head coach Mike Fox announced Monday. Atlantic Coast Conference matchups with Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Florida State and league newcomer Pittsburgh highlight the home slate, which kicks off with a three-game set against College of Charleston Feb. 14-16.
“2014 is another challenging schedule for us,” Fox said. “The ACC will once again be very strong and our league schedule will take on a new look this coming season as we host Pitt for their first conference series. Our players are excited about the 37 games at Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium. It is always our hope to field a competitive ball club and one capable of challenging for another ACC championship and NCAA tournament appearance.”
The Charleston series starts a 16-game homestand to open the year in Chapel Hill, a month-long run that features non-conference series against Xavier and North Florida as well as mid-week games with Appalachian State, Davidson, George Mason and Gardner-Webb. The Tar Heels will also open ACC play March 7-9 against Pittsburgh, the first league opener at home since 2009.
Other home ACC opponents are Georgia Tech (March 21-23), Wake Forest (April 11-13), Virginia Tech (April 25-27) and Florida State (May 9-11). The Yellow Jackets, Hokies and Seminoles all participated in NCAA regionals a year ago.
Carolina’s five league road series include trips to NCAA teams Virginia (April 18-20) and Miami (May 15-17), as well as visits to Maryland (March 14-16), Duke (March 28-30) and Boston College (April 4-6).
One team that is not on the Tar Heels’ league schedule is NC State. However, the two teams will meet in what is sure to be a highly anticipated mid-week game April 15 at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
After hitting the road for the first time in 2014 on the trip to College Park, Md., UNC will return home to face Princeton on March 18. Other mid-week opponents to visit Boshamer Stadium will be Winthrop (March 26), UNC Wilmington (April 1), North Carolina A&T (April 8), Coastal Carolina (April 9), Elon (April 16), Liberty (April 23), East Carolina (April 29) and Campbell (May 6). UNCW and Elon both earned spots in NCAA regionals in 2013.
In addition to the NC State game, Carolina will play several exciting in-state opponents away from Chapel Hill in 2014. The Tar Heels visit ECU on April 22 and Elon on May 7 as well as facing Gardner-Webb at Keeter Stadium in Shelby, N.C., on May 13.
This year’s schedule is subject to change based on the selection of games by the league’s television partners. Any changes to the dates and times of contests will be announced as soon as possible on GoHeels.com.
The 2014 ACC Baseball Championship will be held at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C., May 20-25. NCAA play begins the following weekend with campus sites hosting regional action May 30-June 2.

Left out that Liberty was a NCAA tourney team last year knockin off Clemson in the Columbia regional before fallin to host USC. Don’t sleep on the flames they have the pitching and firepower, even with the number of freshmen they have, to be a real threat this year.
