SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. – The participants for the 2013 Friendly’s Cape League All-Star game were unveiled Saturday morning, July 20, at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School. Cape Cod Baseball League Commissioner Paul Galop announced the two 25-man rosters, which were chosen by the managers of the 10 Cape League teams. Players from all ten Cape League clubs will be represented.
Earning the starting nods were Harwich’s Aaron Bummer (Nebraska) and Bourne’s Jaron Long (Ohio State), who have lead the league in pitching this summer. Bummer has won four games and has a 0.84 ERA in 32 innings of work for the Mariners, while Long, already a Cape League veteran after spending last summer with Bourne, is 5-0 for the Braves this year and a league-low 0.32 ERA. Long will also have a familiar face working with him across the dish, with teammate Max Pentecost (Kennesaw State) selected to start behind the plate.
Falmouth, whose lineup continually leads the league in hitting, is heavily represented with six of its seven selections starting for the West. Kevin Cron(TCU), Leon Byrd (Rice), and Kevin Newman (Arizona) will hold court in the infield, while teammates Rhys Hoskins (Sacramento State) and Dylan Davis(Oregon State) take up positions in the outfield, and Casey Gillaspie (Wichita State) will be the starting designated hitter.
Y-D’s Alex Blandino (Stanford) earns his second trip to the All-Star game after playing in the Cape League’s 2012 midsummer classic. He’ll be joined by Brewster’s Trevor Mitsui (Washington), Chatham’s Dante Flores (USC), and Harwich’s Brandon Cogswell (Virginia) in the infield.
The managers with the two best records from the 2012 regular season will lead their respective division. Mike Roberts (Cotuit) will manage the West and Steve Englert (Harwich) will manage the East, with the eight other managers rounding out the coaching staffs.
The game will be preceded by the Home Run Hitting Contest, which is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. Aaron Brown (Pepperdine) from Brewster, and Tom Lawrence (Maine) and Lukas Schiraldi (Texas) from Chatham will represent the East in the contest, while Jeff Schalk (UAB) of Bourne,Gillaspie of Falmouth andYale Rosen (Washington State) of Cotuit will represent the West. Another player from each division will be selected by the commissioner and deputy commissioner prior to the event.
