LOS ANGELES — Troy Conyers came on in relief and picked up his third win of the season while also delivering a big two-run single to help lead San Diego past Cal Poly, 8-5, in a Los Angeles Regional elimination game Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
San Diego (37-24) and Cal Poly (40-19) battled back and forth until the fifth inning when AJ Robinson scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball. The Toreros plated four runs in the sixth inning despite Conyers’ two-run single being the only hit in the inning.
Cal Poly pushed two runs across in the seventh inning to cut the lead to 8-5, but Trevor Bayless and Max Homick combined to pitch 2 1/2 scoreless innings.
Jimmy Allen had three hits and two RBI for Cal Poly while Austin Bailey had three hits and an RBI for San Diego. Connor Joe and Austin Green both drove in a pair of runs.
The Toreros stay alive, advancing to the nightcap matchup against UCLA. They must win to force a winner-take-all finale on Monday night.
