FROM USA BASEBALL RELEASE
Arkansas baseball head coach Dave Van Horn has been selected as manager for the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, as announced on Monday by USA Baseball.
“I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be selected as manager for the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team,” Coach Van Horn said. “Anytime you have the opportunity to wear the Team USA jersey, it’s an honor and a privilege. Serving as an assistant coach for the team in 2011 was a great experience and I’m excited to put together a great group of coaches and players to represent our country in 2014.”
Coach Van Horn is in his 11th season as the head coach of the Arkansas baseball program. Over his first 10 seasons, Coach Van Horn has led the Razorbacks to three College World Series appearances, 10 NCAA Tournament berths, one Southeastern Conference overall title, three SEC Western Division championships and a total of 427 wins, averaging more than 40 wins a season. Coach Van Horn earned the 1,000th win of his coaching career during the 2013 season and boasts a 1,012-471 record in 25 seasons as a head coach.
“We are pleased to announce Dave Van Horn as the manager of the 2014 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team,” said Eric Campbell, USA Baseball General Manager, National Teams. “Dave’s success at the University of Arkansas speaks for itself, and we are thrilled to have him in place as we prepare for next summer.”
In his 25 seasons as a head coach, Coach Van Horn has led his teams to five College World Series appearances, 14 NCAA Tournament appearances, four regular season overall conference titles, three regular season division titles and one conference tournament championship. He is one of 11 coaches in NCAA history to lead multiple programs to the College World Series. Coach Van Horn also won a Division II national title as the head coach at Central Missouri State.
“Dave’s selection to lead Team USA is a credit not only to his coaching accomplishments, but also is a reflection of the respect he has earned throughout the baseball community,” Vice Chancellor and Director of Athletics Jeff Long said. “His commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the field has resulted in success everywhere he has coached, including the past 11 seasons at the University of Arkansas. It is a tribute to Coach Van Horn, our program and the University of Arkansas that he has been chosen to represent our country in such a meaningful role.”
While Coach Van Horn will be making his managerial debut with Team USA, he is no stranger to the Collegiate National Team as he was an assistant coach for the squad in 2011. The 2011 team compiled an 11-2-1 record, which included winning three games against the Japanese Collegiate All-Stars.
The 2014 Collegiate National Team schedule and the remainder of the coaching staff are currently being finalized. An announcement will be made prior to the end of the year and details will be available on USABaseball.com. In 2012, the Collegiate National Team posted a 12-5 record and earned the bronze medal at the Honkbal Week tournament in the Netherlands.
