LOS ANGELES — The UCLA Bruins took the mythical Dodgertown Classic title after defeating rival USC 6-1 in a non-conference game Sunday afternoon at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins (11-3) finished the weekend 2-1 (and beat Notre Dame, who also finished 2-1) thanks to a tremendous performance from Grant Watson. Watson got through seven innings on only 77 pitches. He allowed only three hits and one run while striking out three to pick up his third win of the season.
UCLA held a 1-0 lead until the sixth inning when Vahn Bozoian tied it up with a long home run to left field. But that was as close to a victory as USC (7-8) would get.
The Bruins quickly responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain the lead. Kevin Kramer struck the big blow with a bases-clearing double after USC reliever Sean Adler allowed an infield hit, walked a batter and hit a batter.
The Bruins added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning on RBI doubles by Pat Valaika and Shane Zeile.
