SAN DIEGO — After having only eight runs and 24 hits in its first four games, San Diego exploded for 18 runs on 17 hits in an 18-11 hit fest in the first game of a doubleheader against Kent State Saturday afternoon at Fowler Park.
The Toreros (2-3) scored five runs in the first two innings against starter Casey Wilson. They busted the game wide open with eight runs in the fifth inning as reliever Spencer Bryant allowed six runs without recording an out.
San Diego continued to put runs on the board against Kent State (0-6), scoring in six of its eight at bats, enroute to the most runs since San Diego beat Minnesota 22-1 in the 2010 regionals.
Dylan Covey was solid allowing only three hits and three walks in five innings, but four San Diego errors in the game pushed his pitch count up. Kent State was able to hit around the Toreros relievers, but never really threatened.
