Dover, Del. – Delaware State University has announced its baseball schedule for the 2013 season. The Hornets’ 51-game regular season slate will include 25 contests at Soldier Field on the DSU campus.
Delaware State will open the 2013 season with a four-game series at UNC-Charlotte Feb. 15-17. The following weekend, the Hornets will compete in the Rock Hill Coca Cola Classic, hosted by Winthrop University in South Carolina. In addition to Winthrop, DSU is scheduled to face Eastern Kentucky and Army in the tournament.
The Hornets will play their 2013 home opener on Friday, March 1 against Niagara as part of a three-game series. The Hornets and Griffs will also play single games on Saturday, Mar. 2 and Sunday, Mar. 3.
Delaware State and the University of Delaware are scheduled to play two games in 2013. The first meeting is set for March 6 at UD’s Bob Hannah Stadium. The Hornets and Hens are slated to meet again the following week (Mar. 13) at Delaware State. The Hornets swept two meetings with Delaware last season, winning 10-6 at UD and 4-1 at Soldier Field.
DSU will begin defense of its 2012 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division crown with a three-game series at Norfolk State, beginning March 16. The Hornets and Spartans are scheduled to play division contests during the 2013 campaign. Delaware State is also scheduled for nine MEAC North games against Maryland-Eastern Shore and six against Coppin State next season.
The Hornets claimed the MEAC North title with a 22-2 mark in division games last season.
Delaware State expects to return six starting position players and top pitchers from its 2012 squad, which tied a school record with 40 wins (40-17-1) and fell one game short of the MEAC Tournament championship.
The Hornets will be led by 2012 MEAC Player-of-the-Year Ryan Haas, who was tops in the league with a .360 average (73-for-203) last season. He also led the MEAC and was tied for 19th among all NCAA Division I players in doubles (0.40 per-game; 22 total). In addition posted a 4-1 record and 3.65 earned run average as a pitcher for the Hornets last season.
2012 All-MEAC First Teamers Jordan Elliott (pitcher), Eddie Sorondo (catcher) and Cameron Cecil (3B) also return next season.
Delaware State head coach J.P. Blandin has 304 wins in 12 seasons with the Hornets. He was named MEAC Coach-of-the-Year in 2012.
