ORONO, Maine– University of Maine director of athletics Steve Abbott announced recently that baseball coach Steve Trimper has agreed to a contract extension. His new contract will run through June 2016.

“Steve has done a great job in all areas of our baseball program,” said Abbott. “He has led Maine to a pair of America East titles in his seven years in Orono. He has worked extremely hard to enhance Maine’s baseball facilities. The latest upgrade, the Paul Mitchell Batting Pavilion opened in August of 2012, and is a great addition to our complex.”

“I would like to thank President Ferguson and Athletic Director Steve Abbott for having the confidence in myself and my staff to lead Maine baseball for years to come,” said Trimper. “I have a lot of great people that surround me: from my assistant coaches, the players, our support staff within the department, and certainly great alumni and donors. This is why I feel confident we can run a successful Division I baseball program. There’s no place I’d rather be and I am proud to be part of the Black

Bear family.”

“Also, baseball in the America East conference is on the rise,” said Trimper. “With the recent success of all our conference teams, I love the challenge of competing against quality programs each week and trying to reach one of our goals of conference championships each year.”

In his seven years in Orono, Trimper has posted a record of 204-178-2. He led Maine to the America East title in both 2006 and 2011, which resulted in NCAA Regional appearances. In 2011, Maine defeated #20 Florida International in the Chapel Hill Regional.

Trimper and the Black Bears open the 2013 season on Friday, Feb. 15 when they travel to Auburn University for the start of a four-game series.
