SAN DIEGO, Calif – University of San Diego head baseball coach Rich Hill has announced the 2013 baseball schedule, which features six opponents coming off NCAA Baseball Tournament appearances in 2012 including Kent State, Stony Brook, Oregon State, Cal State Fullerton, Coastal Carolina, and WCC rival Pepperdine.
“To be able to host Kent State, a 2012 College World Series participant, and Oregon State for a weekend series highlights our non-conference home schedule,” head coach Rich Hill said. “In terms of our non-conference schedule, it’s going to be another top 25 type of slate.”
The Toreros will play 33 home games inside their brand new facility, Fowler Park, including hosting their own tournament. Michigan, St. Louis, and Holy Cross will come to town for the USD Tournament March 7-10.
The Toreros will unveil Fowler Park against cross-town rival San Diego State February 15-17 before welcoming in Kent State, who finished fifth in the College World Series last year, February 21-24.
“We are thrilled to be opening Fowler Park,” Hill said. “The progress of the stadium is coming along significantly.”
After the opening home stand, the Toreros will hit the road for a game at Coastal Carolina (Feb. 28), last year’s Big South champion, before taking part in UNC-Wilmington Tournament March 1-3. The tournament will feature Gardner-Webb, UNC-Wilmington, and Stony Brook, who is coming off a seventh place finish in the College World Series.
The Toreros schedule doesn’t get any easier as they return home to face Cal State Fullerton, last year’s Big West Champ, on March 5th and Seton Hall on March 6th.
The Toreros kick off WCC play at home against BYU March 14-16. The rest of the USD’s home WCC series’ include reigning champ Pepperdine (April 12-14), San Francisco (April 26-28), and Portland (May 10-12).
“Pepperdine, another 2012 NCAA tournament team, is always tough,” Hill said. “I expect the WCC to be as strong as ever, especially in the pitching department.”
The Toreros will play WCC road series’ at Gonzaga (March 22-24), LMU (April 5-7), Santa Clara (April 19-21), and Saint Mary’s (May 3-5).
Other non-conference highlights include a home series against Oregon State (March 28-30) and home and home matchups against the Big West’s Cal State Northridge (March 26 and April 30), UC Irvine (April 9 and May 15), UC Santa Barbara (April 16 and April 24), and UC Riverside (April 23 and May 13).
The Toreros also have a home and home series with UNLV with the Rebels visiting USD March 25th and hosting the Toreros May 6th.
The Toreros began practice on Oct. 6 and their next fall game will be Nov. 3 at 11:00 a.m. at UC Irvine.
