CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Southern Illinois baseball team has announced its 2013 schedule. The schedule features 27 home games and 30 games on the road as the Salukis are scheduled to face six teams that qualified for the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
Southern will open the season with eight road games beginning on Feb. 15 with a three-game series against UAB, winners of last year’s Conference USA Tournament.
The nonconference schedule is highlighted by a three-game series in West Lafayette, Ind. against the defending Big Ten Champion Purdue on May 3-5. The Dawgs will also visit Jacksonville State for a three-game series Feb. 22-24.
The Salukis home opener at Abe Martin Field is scheduled for March 1 with the start of a three-game series with Western Kentucky. SIU will host Northern Illinois the following weekend, March 8-10, before welcoming Illinois to town for a rare four-game series March 15-18. The Salukis will also visit the Fighting Illini for a single game on April 30.
SIU will open Missouri Valley Conference play on the road March 22-24 with three games against defending MVC regular season champion Indiana State. The road portion of the conference schedule also features a rematch of last year’s MVC title game against Creighton (April 19-21) as well as trips to Evansville (April 5-7) and Bradley (May 10-12).
The Salukis will be at home for conference series against Missouri State (April 12-14), Wichita State (April 26-28) and Illinois State (May 16-18).
The MVC Tournament will start on May 21 and is being hosted by Illinois State.
The Salukis return 21 players including six starters and all but two pitchers from the 2012 squad that advanced to the championship game of the MVC Tournament and have added nine newcomers.
