BATON ROUGE, La. – LSU junior right-hander Joe Broussard will undergo surgery on his throwing elbow Friday, and he will miss the 2013 season, coach Paul Mainieri said Wednesday.

Broussard suffered an ulnar collateral tear in his elbow while pitching this summer in the Cape Cod League. Mainieri said Broussard will begin rehabilitation after Friday’s surgery and return to the mound in 2014 with two years of eligibility remaining.

“I’m heartbroken for Joe, because we really felt he would play a vital role for us this season,” Mainieri said. “He’ll go through rehab, and we’ll welcome him back in 2014. Fortunately, we have quality depth within our staff and some of our younger pitchers will have to step up in Joe’s absence.”

Broussard, a product of Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, was 4-1 with a 3.73 ERA in 19 appearances (six starts) for the Tigers during their 2012 SEC Championship season. He recorded 12 walks and 45 strikeouts in 41 innings, and he limited opponents to a .234 batting average.
