CARY, N.C. — USA Baseball has announced the 40 players named to 2012 18U National Team Trials. The trials will be held in Cary, N.C. at the USA Baseball National Training Complex (NTC). Also on Sunday, the 22-man Collegiate National Team reported to Cary to kick off its month-long summer season.
The 18U trials roster was selected following the 2012 Tournament of Stars presented by Major League Baseball, which also took place at the NTC. The event annually serves as the primary selection vehicle for the 18U National Team. Thirty-eight players were selected from the TOS, and they joined the two athletes already named to trials following the 2011 National Team Identification Series. Six players were also selected as alternates for trials.
The 18U program will hold two waves of trials. From June 25-June 30, the team will train and compete in intrasquad scrimmages in Cary, as well as in Games 1 and 2 of the Prospect Classic. On July 1, the roster will be trimmed to 28 players, and from there the team will close out Games 3 and 4 of the Prospect Classic, July 2-3. Following a six week break, the club will reconvene in California to conclude Phase 2 of trials, Aug. 18-27.
At the conclusion of trials, 20 players will be named to the 2012 USA Baseball 18U National Team, which will compete in the 2012 IBAF Junior AAA/18U World Championships in Seoul, South Korea, Aug. 30-Sept. 8. The team will be announced on USABaseball.com at the completion of trials.
The 18U team will be managed by 1998 World Series MVP Scott Brosius, with the assistance of pitching coach Jim Lawler, and assistants Brooks Badeaux and Travis Chapman.
Joining the 18U team in Cary this week will be the 2012 Collegiate National Team. Staff and players traveled from points all across the country on Saturday to officially report for the team. The club held its first practice at 2 p.m. on Sunday at the NTC.
There are currently 26 players on the team, including five alternates and two who remain in Omaha, as Grayson Greiner of South Carolina and Johnny Field of Arizona prepare to square off for the NCAA title at the College World Series.
The Collegiate National Team got its first chance to work together during its practice on Sunday which was open to the public. It will then kick off its 22-game schedule at 7:05 p.m. on Monday against the Fayetteville Swampdogs at J.P. Riddle Stadium in Fayetteville, N.C.
Following that contest, the club will play four other games against Coastal Plain League opponents in addition to participating in the Prospect Classic.
The Collegiate National Team’s summer will continue with a five-game series against Cuba at Latin American Stadium in Havana, July 5-9. The international friendship series will mark the first between the two baseball powers since 1996. Team USA will then conclude its summer tour by traveling to the Netherlands for Honkbal Week in Haarlem, set for July 13-22.
Tennessee head coach Dave Serrano will serve as the manager of Team USA and will be assisted by George Horton (Oregon), Jason Gill (Loyola Marymount) and Andy Stankiewicz (Grand Canyon).
