MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine Waves used a pair of big innings to take a 12-2 victory against Long Beach State Tuesday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
With the offense giving him plenty of support, starter Matt Maurer didn’t have to be perfect. That didn’t stop Maurer from throwing six scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and two walks, to pick up his fourth win of the season.
After the game, I caught up with Maurer and Pepperdine head coach Steve Rodriguez. Maurer discussed how simple his job has been pitching the midweek games, due to the run support his offense has provided:
Rodriguez said his team seemed to play with a renewed energy the past two days. He also talked about what Maurer has brought to the table as the Waves’ midweek starter this season and freshman Kolten Yamaguchi’s emergence during the last weekend.
