LOS ANGELES — In the midst of an eight games in eight days stretch, Indiana starter Joey DeNato was just what the Hoosiers pitching staff needed on Thursday afternoon. The southpaw was lights out, needing only 101 pitches in a complete game 3-1 win over Loyola Marymount at Page Stadium.
DeNato allowed only three hits and one walk to the Lions (5-9) to move to 3-1 on the season.
Indiana (6-11) got on the board in the fourth inning with a Dillon Dooney RBI double. The Hoosiers added another pair of runs against starter John Lally (1-1) in the sixth inning. Kyle Schwarber scored on a Sam Travis single after knocking in Chad Clark with a triple into the right-centerfield gap.
DeNato had set down 15 consecutive LMU batters before Matt Lowenstein led off the seventh inning with a walk. Lowenstein scored the only Lion run of the afternoon four pitches later when Scott Harkin hit a double off the Mikos Blue Monster left field wall. Following a mound visit, DeNato stranded Harkin starting another streak of consecutive batters sat down — the final nine of the game.
Clark, Travis and Tim O’Conner each recorded a pair of hits.
