MALIBU, Calif — Pepperdine’s Joe Sever beat out a bases loaded infield single for the game-winning RBI and freshman Aaron Brown pitched around a leadoff single to close the door in the eighth inning as the Waves defeated No. 19 Oklahoma 7-6 in a travel curfew shortened game Sunday afternoon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
After both teams had agreed before the game that no inning would start after 2:00 PM, the back-and-forth affair was called in the middle of the 7th inning just after 2:05 PM.
Pepperdine (2-1) won the series with timely hitting and a deep pitching staff. Coach Steve Rodriguez had to use seven different pitchers after starter Alex Najera did not record an out, walking a batter and hitting two others before he was pulled.
Matt Forgatch, Austin Davidson and James Grandpre each recorded a pair of hits for the Waves. Forgatch and Bryan Langlois both knocked solo home runs. Matt Oberste and Cody Reine had multi-hit afternoons for the Sooners (1-2). Michael Swanner picked up the win in relief.
