The Waves (1-1) got a strong pitching performance from sophomore Scott Frazier, who pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out six batters.
Frazier got plenty of run support after Pepperdine was able to chase starter Jonathan Gray after only 2 2/3. Gray allowed only two hits, but walked six batters.
What was a 1-0 game turned into a 4-0 Waves lead in the fourth inning when Tony Cooper was credited with an infield single after reliever Ty Taylor failed to touch the bag on a play at first base. Instead of an out that would have ended the inning, two runs scored as Joe Sever never slowed down, hustling all the way from second base to score. Cooper would later come around to score and Pepperdine never looked back.
The two teams will play the rubber match of the series at Eddy D. Field Stadium Sunday at 11:00 AM (PST).
