Texas A&M has been unanimously selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2012 Big 12 baseball regular season title. In a vote by the league’s head coaches, the Aggies earned eight first place votes, totaling 64 points. In 2011, TAMU made its fifth College World Series appearance, claimed its second-straight Big 12 postseason crown and earned a share of the regular season title. The Aggies are ranked in the top 10 of all four preseason national polls entering the 2012 campaign.
Head coaches are not permitted to vote for their own team in the poll.
This marks the second time Texas A&M has been selected as the top pick in the preseason poll (records dating back to 1999). The Aggies were ranked first in the preseason in 2008.
Texas, who also claimed a share of the 2011 Big 12 regular season title and appeared in the CWS, ranks second with 54 total points. Oklahoma, Baylor and Missouri round out the top five spots. For the second year in row, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech claimed the sixth and seventh places, respecitvely. Kansas State and Kansas round out the poll’s results.
Big 12 baseball begins on Friday, Feb. 17 with conference play kicking off the weekend of March 16.
