HYANNIS – Commissioner Paul Galop has announced the 2012 Cape Cod Baseball League schedule.
The regular season begins June 14 with a full slate of five games, preceded by the annual Frank Finn/CCBL Invitational pre-season tryout on Saturday, June 9 at Spillane Field in Wareham. There are no scheduled doubleheaders this summer.
“We’re excited to be rolling out the 2012 CCBL schedule our Executive Committee has approved,” said Galop. “We’ve eliminated scheduled doubleheaders and created a balance that is nearly perfect. In fact, schedule guru Arnold Mycock of Cotuit, who personally designed the schedule for several decades feels this might be the most balanced schedule we’ve ever had. There is no better endorsement than his.”
The CCBL All-Star game is slated for Saturday, July 28 and after three years at Fenway Park, will not be played in Boston, but at a site to be determined, probably on Cape Cod.
The Cape League playoffs begin Thursday, August 9 and for the third straight year will involve eight teams. Once again, playoff games at non-lighted fields will begin at 4 p.m. The earlier starting time allows more working fans to attend playoff games.
All rounds will be best two-out-of-three, which enables each team to be guaranteed at least one home playoff game. The championship round will match the East and West division playoff winners.
More than 320,000 fans attended Cape League games last summer, including 7,007 at the All-Star Game at Fenway Park and over 40,000 during the playoffs.
“Our playoffs will again feature the top four teams in each division,” Galop said. “We enjoyed tremendous success with this format the past two years. Fans, players and franchise members all enjoyed the additional baseball, as evidenced by huge attendance numbers.”
