WORCESTER, Mass. – The Holy Cross baseball team has released its 2012 schedule, announced by athletic director Richard M. Regan, Jr. and head coach Greg DiCenzo. The squad will play in 49 total games starting with a trip to College Station, Texas, to compete against the reigning Big 12 champions, Texas A&M, from Feb. 24-26.
After the opening weekend against the Aggies, the Crusaders will embark on a one-week trip through North and South Carolina. With Campbell serving as host, Holy Cross will play a three-game set with the Camels and North Carolina Central (March 3-5). The team will continue its road series with mid-week match-ups at North Carolina-Charlotte (March 6) and Clemson (March 7). The spring break trip ends with a three-game set at Winthrop in Rock Hill, S.C. from March 9-11.
The Crusaders return north for a round-robin series with St. John’s and Albany at Albany’s home field over the weekend of March 17-18 and finish out the early season road trips at Boston College on March 20. Holy Cross hosts Columbia and Stony Brook for its first home series, playing the Lions on March 24 and the Seawolves on March 25. Both will be double headers held on Fitton Field. Two more regional contests follow, as the Crusaders travel to UMass on March 27 and host Harvard on March 28.
The Patriot League season will get under way with doubleheaders on March 31 and April 1 in Lewisburg, Pa., versus Bucknell. The team will then host four straight opponents, including Hartford (April 3), Marist (April 4), conference foe Lafayette (April 7-8) and Central Connecticut (April 10). Twelve road games follow with trips to Dartmouth (April 11), reigning Patriot League champion Navy (April 4-5), Brown (April 18), Lehigh (April 21-22), Yale (April 24) and Siena (April 25). The 2012 regular season concludes with a doubleheader weekend against Army (April 28-29).
After the season wraps up against the Black Knights, the Crusaders will aim for another trip to the Patriot League Championship. The top four Patriot League teams will play for the league title, starting with the semifinal round from May 12-13 with the top two teams continuing to play in the championship round from May 19-20.
The Crusaders completed the 2011 season with a record of 24-23-1, finishing above .500 for the first time since 1991. The 2012 team will be led by senior co-captains Matt Croglio (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Chris Sintetos (Bethesda, Md.).
