Here is your Fall Ball Update for October 25th.
Western Michigan: Brown 10 Gold 5
KALAMAZOO, Mich.– Brown struck for three runs in the first inning and never looked back, clinching the annual Brown & Gold series with a 10-5 win in decisive Game 3. Senior left-hander Casey Webber (Tinley Park, Ill./Providence Catholic) started for the Brown and tossed three scoreless innings, striking out three and walking none.
Sophomore Vinnie Booker (Clarkston/Lake Orion) was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs scored while freshman Caleb Caton (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI. Five Brown players recorded multiple hits.
Gold managed only five hits on the day and sophomore Dan Shutes (Three Rivers/Three Rivers) had the team’s only extra base hit. Shutes also recorded an RBI and was solid defensively at shortstop.
Texas Tech: Red 5 Black 3
LUBBOCK, Texas – Junior left-handed pitcher Rusty Shellhorn and two other Red Team pitchers combined for a one-hitter against the Black Team during Red’s 5-3 win in game two of the annual Texas Tech baseball Red & Black Series on Monday at Rip Griffin Park.
The victory gives the Red Team a 2-0 lead in the five-game series.
Shellhorn allowed a single to third baseman Reid Redman to lead off the game, which was the final hit the Black Team would tally the remainder of the game. Shellhorn (1-0) earned the win while going 4.1 innings and allowing two runs (both unearned) on one hit with three strikeouts and two walks.
Oklahoma: Red 10 White 5
NORMAN, Okla. — Jake Smith and Drew Harrison keyed the offense during the Red’s 10-5 win in seven innings over White on Monday afternoon at L. Dale Mitchell Park. The intrasquad game was the first of five in the annual Red-White Series, which marks the end of fall practices for the baseball team.
Smith finished with three hits and three RBI and Harrison drove in a bases-clearing double in the fifth that broke a 3-3 tie. Smith got the offense rolling with a two-run triple to the gap in left center in the second inning and capped off the scoring with a RBI double in the seventh inning.
Butler finishes Fall Series in Four Games
The team coached by assistant coach Michael Dalton posted a 3-0 shutout in Game 4 of the Butler World Series, winning the best-of-5 intrasquad series 3-1.
Senior Griffin Richeson finished the fall season with a team-leading .394 batting average. Lucas Calderon, eligible in 2012 after transferring to Butler last year, hit .348 this fall and junior Jack Dillon hit .341. Calderon led the team in what was called “well-hit” balls, making solid contact at a .370 clip.
