Cal-State Fullerton 10 Vanderbilt 8

Nashville, Tenn. – Greg Velazquez had two hits and three RBI and Austin Kingsolver had three hits and drove in two as Cal State Fullerton beat Vanderbilt, 10-8, in a nine-inning fall scrimmage Saturday morning at Hawkins Field.

The Titans are midway through their official fall workout period and made the trip to Nashville, Tenn., for a two-game practice series with the Commodores. Vanderbilt is wrapping up their official practice schedule this weekend with the Titans.

Missouri: Black 2 Gold 1

COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Black Team defeated the Gold Team, 2-1, in game three of the Mizzou baseball Fall World Series on Saturday evening (Oct. 22) at Taylor Stadium. The win for the Black Team is its first of the Fall World Series as the Gold Team now holds a 2-1 lead in the series heading into game four, which will be played today (Oct. 23) at 1 p.m.

Freshman Nick Moore drove in the game-winning run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Moore doubled to right field to drive in Scott Sommerfeld from second base, which turned out to be the game-winning run for the Black Team. The Black Team would have added another run, but Dane Opel was thrown out at the plate on Moore’s double.

Marshall: Team Blain 6 Team Waggoner 5

HUNTINGTON, W.VA. – Coach Blain’s team used a five run performance in the top of the sixth inning to battle back from a four run deficit and knock off Coach Waggoner’s team 6-5. The game was the second of the Marshall Fall World Series and the win from Blain’s team makes the series even at 1-1.

Blain’s team, who wore green attire during the match, booked the first score of the game during the top of the second inning. Nolan Tucci used a sacrifice bunt from Sergio Leon to advance to second base after getting on from a walk. During the next at bat, a botced throw from Coach Waggoner’s second baseman, Travis McConnell, helped Tucci advance to third and cross homeplate as well, giving Blain’s team a 1-0 lead.

Illinois State: Red 13 Black 7

NORMAL, Ill. – Junior right-hander Chris Razo earned his second win of the fall, as the red team beat the black team, 13-7, Saturday morning at Duffy Bass Field in Normal, Ill. Razo struck out five through five innings and allowed just three earned runs to help the red team win Illinois State’s Fall World Series finale.

Matt Mirabal went 3-for-5 with a home run and two RBI to highlight the red team’s production. Brett Kay turned in a 3-for-6 performance with three runs scored, and Zac Johnson was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the red team. Mike Hollenbeck led the black team, going 3-for-5 with one RBI and one run. Bryan Huff was 3-for-6 with one RBI and two runs scored. Right-hander Otto Roberts suffered the loss, pitching three innings with two strikeouts and five earned runs.

Texas 4 UTSA 3 (10 innings)

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Longhorns earned a 4-3 win over the UTSA Roadrunners in an exhibition game on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Horns won the game in walk-off fashion in the last inning of a predetermined 10-inning affair.

Trailing 3-2, Texas got the first three runners aboard in the bottom of the 10th inning. Collin Shaw singled through the right side of the infield to leadoff the frame. Taylor Stell and Cohl Walla were both looking to sacrifice runners, but saw just four balls as each drew a walk to load the bases. Jackson Mellina grounded to short to drive in the tying run, but R.J. Perucki’s throw to second sailed over Matt James’ head at second base and Shaw and Stell both came home to end the contest.

Memphis: Blue 6 Gray 3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Derrick Thomas had a home run and four RBI as the Blue team earned a 6-3 win over the Gray club in the annual Blue/Gray intrasquad scrimmage that took place on Saturday at FedExPark.

The Blue squad struck first in the scrimmage off a two-run home run by Thomas. Jacob Wilson lead off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line and later stole third. With two outs in the frame, Thomas belted the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for the homer.

St. John’s: Black 5 Red 1

QUEENS, N.Y. – Kyle Hansen had five strikeouts in 5.0 innings of no-hit ball, while Jeremy Baltz and Eric Peterson each went 3-for-4 as Black defeated Red, 5-1, to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven Intrasquad World Series. Six different players recorded an RBI to lead Black in the six-inning contest. Pat Talbut had the lone RBI for Red.

Hansen had one strikeout in a 1-2-3 first inning before the Black offense sent seven men to the plate in a two-run top of the second. Peterson led off the inning with a single and Julien Plana reached on a fielder’s choice before Martin Kelly made it 1-0 with a RBI single. Matt Wessinger followed with an RBI fielder’s choice and Black led 2-0.

Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Gray no-hit Scarlet behind a strong pitching performance from Brad Goldberg and a huge day from Mike Carroll and ran away with a 13-0 series-ending victory in game 4 of the Scarlet & Gray World Series Saturday afternoon at Bill Davis Stadium.

After each starter faced the minimum through the first two innings, Gray plated four runs in the third, using a pair of errors and singles by Kirby Pellant, Mike Carroll and Brad Hallberg. The home team then blew the game wide open with six more in the fourth, using two more Scarlet errors, a pair of walks, a hit batter and a pair of two run singles by Carroll and Patrick Porter.
