CINCINNATI – University of Cincinnati baseball coach Brian Cleary announced the 2012 schedule on Tuesday. The schedule features 30 home games at Marge Schott Stadium, three opponents that advanced to the 2011 NCAA Championship, and a return trip to the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge.
For the fourth straight year, Cincinnati will open the season at the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge in the Clearwater/St. Petersburg, Fla. area. The Bearcats play Purdue on Feb. 17, followed by tilts vs. Indiana on Feb. 18 and Penn State on Feb. 19.
During the second week of the baseball season, UC will travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to play in the Wake Forest Tournament from Feb. 24-26. Cincinnati will open with BIG EAST rival Georgetown, followed by Wake Forest and then Maryland-Baltimore County.
The Bearcats will start their home schedule with an 11-game homestand at Marge Schott Stadium, beginning on March 2 when they welcome Oakland (Mich.) to campus for a four-game series. The homestand will continue with a four-game series against Chicago State (March 9-11) and conclude with a three-game matchup vs. Big Ten foe Michigan State (March 16-18).
After weekday games at Butler (March 20) and vs. Kentucky (March 21), UC will begin conference play on the road at Louisville (March 23-25). Cincinnati will then travel to play Dayton on March 28 before hosting its first home conference games of the season with a three-game series vs. Pittsburgh (March 30-April 1). A trip to Ohio on April 3 is sandwiched by UC’s second home conference series of the year, a three-game matchup against USF April 5-7.
The fourth-annual Joe Nuxhall Classic is scheduled for April 10-11 at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where the Bearcats will look to defend their championship from last season. UC will play Wright State on the opening day of the Nuxhall Classic, with Day 2’s opponent – either Miami or Xavier – to be determined by the results of Day 1.
After the Nuxhall Classic, UC will open a five-game road trip with a three-game series at Notre Dame (April 13-15), followed by weekday games at Kentucky (April 17) and at Ohio State (April 18).
A home-and-home series against cross-town rival Xavier (April 24-25) is sandwiched by three-game home BIG EAST series vs. St. John’s (April 20-22) and Rutgers (April 27-29), as well as a weekday rematch against vs. Wright State (May 2).
UC will then continue conference action with a three-game, two-day series at UConn (May 5-6) before returning to the tri-state area to play a home-and-home against Miami (OH), May 8-9.
The Bearcats will conclude their 2012 regular-season schedule on the road with a three game series at Villanova (May 11-13), followed by a season-finale, three-game home series vs. Georgetown (May 17-19).
The BIG EAST Baseball Championship, where the Bearcats have advanced to in each of the last four years, is scheduled for May 23-27 in Clearwater, Fla.
