NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Matt Wilson has been named as a volunteer assistant coach for the baseball program effective immediately, head coach Matt Curtis announced Wednesday. Wilson joins the Matadors after serving as an assistant coach at San Joaquin Delta College from 2008-11.

“We expect that Matt will be a tremendous asset to our program. Coming from a State Championship Junior College program at San Joaquin Delta, he understands the type of program we want to build,” said Curtis. “Having prepped at Crespi High School, he brings a network in the San Fernando Valley that will be of tremendous of value to our program.”

While at San Joaquin Delta, Wilson’s squad earned a state championship in 2011 and was the runner-up in 2009. In 2008, the team made its first playoff appearance in nine years. During his stint with SJDC, 17 players he coach eventually transferred to Division-I schools.

During the summers, Wilson has been a coach with the Humboldt Crabs (2007-09) and the St. Joseph Mustangs (2010-11). As a hitting coach for the Crabs, the team posted a batting average above .300 each season and won two league titles, averaging over 40 wins per season.

As a pitching coach for St. Joseph, Wilson led the staff to a 2011 MINK league title with a 42-12 record. The team led the MINK league in ERA and opposing batting average that season as well. Over the two-year stretch, the Mustangs made two NBC World Series appearances and finished fourth overall in 2010.

Wilson was also a volunteer assistant coach at Sacramento State University from 2006 to 2007, where he worked with the catchers, hitters and pitchers, and also coached first base. While there, the team appeared in two Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournaments.

Wilson was a four-year starting catcher at Sacramento State from 2002-05. In his senior year, he led the team in home runs and was second in RBI while defensively he caught 23 runners attempting to steal. He left school in the Top 10 for career at-bats and hit by pitches. Sacramento State elected Wilson to the All-Decade Team (2000-10) for his work with the program.

Matt Wilson earned his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology from Sacramento State in 2006 and his master’s in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in 2010. He currently resides in Canoga Park.

Also, returning to the staff this season is Director of Baseball Operations Tom Hutchison. Hutchison, a graduate of San Fernando Valley State College (now Cal State Northridge), will begin his sixth season as a member of the coaching staff. His duties with the team include organizing travel arrangements and coordinating team apparel, as well as managing game day operations.

Hutchison joined the staff in 2007 and worked in the Department of Recreation and Parks for the City of Los Angeles, retiring after 32 years of service in 1998. He currently resides in Canyon Country.
