CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston baseball head coach Monte Lee has released the 2012 Cougar schedule. College of Charleston will once again play a challenging non-conference schedule against some of the nation’s best teams as well as an always tough slate in the Southern Conference.
The Cougars will face six teams that were 2011 NCAA participants, including BIG EAST champion Connecticut, regional host Clemson and two-time World Series champion South Carolina. In-state rival Coastal Carolina will play Charleston in home and away mid-week games, as well as Jacksonville who went 1-2 in last year’s Gainesville regional.
“We are really excited about the 2012 schedule,” head coach Monte Lee said. “As usual, we are playing a very tough non-conference schedule, and our conference schedule is always difficult. We look forward to playing this spring against so many quality opponents.”
The Cougars will play 29 home games at Patriots Point, including hosting the Cougar Invitational on Feb. 24-26. Connecticut, Xavier and Rhode Island will all travel to Charleston in the season’s second weekend after CofC opens the season on Feb. 17 at South Alabama.
The Cougars will make one-game road trips to Jacksonville, Winthrop, Coastal Carolina, UNC Wilmington and Charleston Southern in March, while hosting Elon, Wofford and Davidson in weekend series.
In the last weekend of March, the Cougars will head to Statesboro, Ga. to face the Georgia Southern Eagles who won the 2011 Southern Conference tournament. College of Charleston then returns home to face the two-time defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks at Patriots Point on Wednesday, April 4 at 6 p.m.
After a road series at Appalachian State, a home series against Samford and single game against Winthrop, the Cougars will travel to Columbia to face the Gamecocks again on April 17. Crosstown rival The Citadel will head to Patriots Point for a series on April 20-22.
College of Charleston will travel to Clemson for a weekend series on May 5-7, followed by home games against Savannah State, UNC Asheville and Coastal Carolina.
The 2012 Southern Conference tournament will be held on May 23-27 in Greenville, S.C., at Fluor Field, home of the Class A Greenville Drive.
College of Charleston finished the 2011 season with a 39-22 record, coming up just short of a Southern Conference title in the tournament semifinals. Returning redshirt-sophomore Daniel Aldrich made several All-America teams and was the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball Freshman of the Year.
