American University’s Stephen Lumpkins was a 13th round selection in the 2011 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals in 2011.
Interesting enough, Lumpkins hasn’t played baseball in the last two years since American doesn’t have a baseball program. The 6-8 225 pounder spent the last three years as a member of the basketball program averaging 13.5 points and finishing second in the Patriot League with 8.2 rebounds per game.
He decided this summer to sign with the Royals after a strong workout with the team instead of heading to the NECBL to play with the Laconia Muskrats where he was scheduled to play.
He ended up making 10 appearances (eight starts) with the Royals team in the Arizona League where he struggled going 2-1 with a 7.02 ERA in 33.1 innings pitched.
