Fullerton, Calif. – The 2012 Cal State Fullerton baseball schedule, headlined by an opening weekend series with College World Series runner-up University of Florida, was released Thursday by first-year Titan Head Coach Rick Vanderhook.
The Titans have a diverse 58-game slate set up with 30 of the games being played at Goodwin Field, home of the four-time national champion Titan baseball program. They will face 21 different opponents across nine conferences – from as far west as Honolulu, Hawaii, and stretching as far east as Gainsville, Florida.
Seven of this year’s opponents advanced to the postseason a year ago and will account for 19 of the Titans’ contests. Four reached last year’s Super Regional round and a pair of them finished their seasons at the College World Series.
The Titans’ first two road series will pit them against the two College World Series qualifiers in Florida and Texas A&M. The Titans and Gators will kick off the 2012 season at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville, Feb. 17-19. It will be the two teams’ first meeting with each other. The next road trip will take the Titans to College Station, Tex., where they will square up for three games with the Aggies, Mar. 9-11, at the newly renovated Olsen Field at Blue Bell Park.
A third non-conference road trip will see Fullerton take on the perennial western powerhouse Arizona State in a two-game midweek series, Mar. 27-28, in Tempe, Ariz.
For the second of three consecutive seasons, the Titans will play a weekend series at Hawai’i. This year’s match-up will feature a traditional three-game non-conference series in Honolulu before the Rainbow Warriors become the Big West Conference’s 10th member in 2013.
Non-conference opponents coming to Fullerton for weekend series in 2012 will be TCU (Feb. 24-26), Utah Valley State (Mar. 2-4) and Oral Roberts (Mar. 23-25). Big West counterpart Long Beach State will also be in town for a three-game non-conference series Mar. 16-18.
The 24-game Big West Conference season will begin on Mar. 30 against Cal State Northridge at home and end with the Titans playing long-time rival Long Beach State at Blair Field from May 25-27. The Titans will be at home for Northridge, UC Davis, Cal Poly and UC Riverside, and travel to UC Irvine, Pacific, Santa Barbara and Long Beach State.
The NCAA postseason will begin with Regional play at selected sites from June 1-4, followed by the Super Regional the following weekend, June 8-11. The College World Series, in its second season at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, will run Friday, June 15 until Tuesday, June 26 in Omaha, Neb.
