LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville baseball head coach Dan McDonnell has announced the addition of former catcher Kyle Cheesebrough as an assistant coach with the Cardinals for the 2012 season.
Cheesebrough, who played two seasons at Louisville in 2008 and 2009 and was the Cardinals’ student assistant coach in 2010, returns to U of L after serving one season as the volunteer assistant at the University of Pittsburgh in 2011.
“We’re excited to have Kyle returning to our program and he is the perfect fit for this role,” said McDonnell. “He played two seasons in our program, was outstanding as a student assistant and did a great job at Pitt last season. He will work with our catchers and hitters and we expect him to be a great asset because he knows our system and he understands the expectations of coaching baseball at the University of Louisville.”
In his one season at Pitt in 2011, Cheesebrough worked with catcher Kevan Smith, who earned First Team All-BIG EAST honors while hitting .397 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI, and Anthony Defabio, a Third Team All-BIG EAST designated hitter who finished with a .337 average.
During his two seasons as a player at Louisville, Cheesebrough played in 32 games with 18 starts as the Cardinals won back-to-back BIG EAST Tournament titles, won one BIG EAST regular-season title, made two NCAA Regional appearances and advanced to an NCAA Super Regional. After his playing career ended, the native of Rowlett, Texas, completed his degree in education in 2010 while working as a student assistant as U of L set a school record with 50 wins, won a second straight BIG EAST regular season title and earned No. 7 national seed in the NCAA Championship.
Cheesebrough replaces former volunteer assistant Xan Barksdale, who departed U of L last month to be an assistant coach at East Tennessee State.
