For the first time in 14 years, the MAAC Baseball Championships will be contested in the Capital Region. The conference released its 2011-12 Championship schedule today, indicating Siena College would host the next baseball championships May 24-27 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium in Troy.

“We’re thrilled to bring this Tournament and the excitement of postseason Division I baseball back to the Capital Region,” director of athletics John D’Argenio said. “I’d like to thank Hudson Valley Community College and athletic director Kristan Pelletier for making this first class facility available, and helping us put the bid together. Our marketing team will work diligently this year to make sure the MAAC student athletes have a top rate championship experience, and Capital Region baseball fans know that this is a must see event.”

Siena last served as host for the MAAC Baseball Championships in 1998 when the Saints won their third of four consecutive league titles. The Tournament was held at Heritage Park in Colonie each May from the time Siena joined the conference in 1990 through 1998.

The MAAC baseball league includes: Canisius, Iona, Fairfield, Niagara, Manhattan, Marist, Saint Peter’s and Siena. The top four teams qualify for the double elimination Championships. Manhattan defeated Siena in the 2011 Championships at Waterfront Park in Trenton, N.J. The winner of the event receives an automatic bid to the 64-team NCAA Baseball Championships, which culminate with the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.

This marks the first conference championship Siena has hosted since the 2010 MAAC Basketball Tournament were contested at Times Union Center. The championship sites are chosen by the MAAC Committee on Athletic Administration.
