Now onto our Quick Hits
- One of the most impressive victories of the day was Charlotte taking their opener over Arkansas 3-2 in the Tempe Regional. I had a chance to see the 49ers earlier this year against UMass. I came away from that game with the thought they were just a good Atlantic-10 squad that wouldn’t do any major damage in the 2011 postseason. I was wrong and now they are in position with another victory to make a Regional final. We should see how they do against the Sun Devils on Saturday evening.
- One of my other big takes away from Friday was that Dallas Baptist is for real. I had questioned them throughout the season but they have a solid lineup and overcame some adversity to win a 3-2 10 inning game against 2010 CWS participant Oklahoma. They know advance on to face TCU in the winner’s bracket matchup.
- Both Georgia Tech and UCLA were upset in their openers. GT was shutdown by Austin Peay LHP Jack Snodgrass who went seven innings giving up seven hits and only one run. Jordan Hankins led the offense with a solo homer in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. UCLA got shut down by USF sophomore RHP Kyle Zimmer who pitched a complete game shutout as the Dons won 3-0 over the the Bruins. He only gave up four hits while striking out eleven batters.
- Joe Prosinki pitched a complete game six hit shutout against Arizona as the Seton Hall Pirates won 4-0. It was the Pirates ninth straight win and sets up a winner’s bracket matchup with Texas A&M on Saturday night. The Pirates are expected to send ace Joe DiRocco to the mound as he is 8-1 with a 1.68 ERA.
- Last year, I was at the front of the bandwagon for UConn saying they were a team to be reckoned with for the 2011 season. They have been a major disappointment all season even though they won the Big East Regular Season title by 3.5 games over Seton Hall and have won 41 games. They were absolutely smoked by Coastal Carolina 13-1 as Matt Barnes was torched for seven runs in 4.1 inning. The Huskies have been a flawed team all season and need to start playing up to their talent level if they are going to make a run through the loser’s bracket and make their first appearance in a Super Regional in school history. Yes, I am off the bandwagon now!
