Due to the facilities at Southern Utah I was able to be in the dugout instead of a press box. It was an interesting perspective to say the least. It was an important series just like every other Summit League series. The Leathernecks played extremely well and everybody contributed on some level. The Purple & Gold outscored the Thunderbirds 44-17 and ended two of the games early in seven innings. Dating back to last season, Western Illinois has ended three out of the last four games against Southern Utah early.
Standing in the dugout provided insight on how talented this team is and how much they have invested. This is a different Leatherneck team than the past few seasons. The pitching was excellent all weekend and The Purple Army hit .402 during the four games.
Obviously, the upcoming series with IPFW looms large in the race to make the tournament. There is no doubt in my mind after witnessing this past weekend that the team in Purple is on fire and it will only continue.
