Here are some my thoughts from the games played on March 23rd.
The Stetson Hatters picked up a crucial non-conference victory on Wednesday over the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee. The offense was led by Ben Carhart who hit a two run homer in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game at four to cause extra innings. Ryan Lashley drove home the eventual winning run in the 11th inning by doubling home Mark Jones. Stetson’s Robbie Powell was excellent in relief pitching the final 3.2 giving up five hits and only one unearned run while striking out five batters.
Both Florida and Virginia continued to dominate their opponents. The Gators completed a two game midweek sweep over Winthrop on Wednesday night with a 10-0 victory coming on the heels of a 22-5 win on Tuesday. Virginia recorded their second straight shutout victory on Wednesday by defeating area rival Towson 5-0 after beating the Tigers 6-0 on Tuesday.
The only other upset on Wednesday night was the UNLV Rebels defeating UC-Irvine 4-3 in Vegas. Hunter Beaty broke a 3-3 tied in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly that brought home Travis Feiner with the eventual winning run. The Rebels are on the verge of becoming a real pain for the TCU Horned Frogs if they continue to dominate the Mountain West conference with the Horned Frogs. Coach Chambers at UNLV has done a fantastic job in his first campaign.
Arizona State bounced back in a strong way on Wednesday afternoon by dismantling the Cal-State Fullerton Titans in a 10-1 ballgame. Riccio Torrez led the Sun Devils going 3-5 with three runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore RHP Alex Blackford was solid on the hill giving up three hits and a run in his six innings of work.
