Here is your ACC Recap for March 20th
#4 Florida State 12 #5 Virginia 11
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sunday is the first day of a new week, but it was also the end of the longest of weeks for the fourth-ranked Florida State baseball team.
Playing their fourth consecutive extra-inning game, the fourth-ranked Seminoles got a leadoff homer from Rafael Lopez in the top of the 10th inning and Mike McGee made it stand up in a wild 12-11 victory over No. 5 Virginia.
#14 Clemson 9 Duke 3
Clemson, SC – Scott Firth allowed three hits and no earned runs in 6.2 innings pitched and #16 Clemson pounded out 17 hits in its 9-3 victory over Duke at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers, who swept the series, improved to 10-7 overall and 3-3 in the ACC. It was Clemson’s first three-game sweep of the season and its first sweep of Duke since 2007. The Blue Devils dropped to 15-7 overall and 2-4 in ACC play.
Firth (1-0), a sophomore righthander from Buffalo Grove, IL, earned the win in his first start of the season. In a career-long 6.2 innings pitched, he yielded just three hits, no earned runs, and one walk with five strikeouts. After giving up a first-inning double, Firth retired 18 of the next 19 Blue Devils, while the only batter who reached base during that stretch did so on an error. Alex Frederick and Matt Campbell combined to pitch the final 2.1 innings to close out the game. The three Tiger hurlers combined to hold Duke to 0-for-9 with two outs and allowed only one leadoff batter to reach base.
#17 North Carolina 7 Virginia Tech 6
BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 15 North Carolina used eight different pitchers who combined for five innings of two-run baseball en route to a 7-6 win over Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. The win capped off a three-game sweep for the Tar Heels and Carolina has now won 12 straight games against the Hokies.
The Tar Heels jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a RBI single from Seth Baldwin and a well executed double steal with men at first and third.
The lead would not last long as the Hokies responded with three runs in the bottom of the second as they sent seven batters to the plate.
#22 Georgia Tech 11 NC State 4
ATLANTA – Led by Daniel Palka, the Georgia Tech baseball team notched 14 hits for 11 runs topping NC State, 11-4 on Sunday to sweep the Wolfpack in front of 1,157 at Russ Chandler Stadium. Palka was 3-for-5 on the day with four RBIs, just the homerun shy of the cycle.
“One of the things that we wanted to do was go out and get after them right away,” said Head Coach Danny Hall, “and we did that in the first two innings and coasted from there. [Palka] is a good hitter and a tough out and we are just happy that he is on our side that is for sure.” Tech (17-4, 6-0 ACC) has won 12-straight games with their sweep of NC State (10-10, 1-5 ACC) and is still undefeated in ACC play. Buck Farmer earned his third win of the season, working 6.2 innings and allowing four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking four. Farmer sat down two NC State batters by way of the K in the first, second and fourth innings, tacking on another strikeout in the sixth.
