Week 2 was full of upsets and great performances. Several teams continued to climb the rankings ladder and a few continued to tumble.

Of course we will start with the bad news. Last weeks #1 Louisville (4-2) was one of the victims of the upsets. Toledo went to Louisville and shocked the Cardinals and took 2 of 3 and dropped them to #6.

The team to benefit was the new #1 Fresno St (6-0). Fresno St had a great week going 4-0 with a mid week win over Oregon St before sweeping Pepperdine this past weekend. The #1 spot came down to Fresno St and College of Charleston (7-0). CofC had a nice week going 4-0 with a mid week win over UNCW and sweeping Youngstown St. But beating Oregon St and sweeping Pepperdine is just a tad bit more impressive, however CofC did move up to the #3 spot nothing to be ashamed of that’s for sure.

TCU (4-3) stayed at #2 after a 2-2 week picking up a mid week win over Baylor before dropping 2 of 3 to Cal St Fullerton. TCU’s ace Matt Purke missed his start this weekend with a blister which did not help vs Fullerton.

Another team that had a rough week was Coastal Carolina (4-4) who fell to #7 after going 1-3 in their own tourney, dropping games to Kansas St, Cal and NC State and picking up their win vs #20 Western Kentucky (5-2).

FAU (5-3) took one on the chin as the American East favorite Stony Brook(2-1) made the trip to Florida to open their season making an impact. FAU dropped 2 of 3 to Stony Brook and dropped from #6 to #13. Not sure how they go from beating Miami mid week to dropping 2 of 3 at home to Stony Brook?

One of the hottest teams in the country also continued their climb in the poll and adding wins to their hopeful NCAA resume in SE Louisiana (6-1). The Lions climbed to #5 after putting a 13-1 beat down on instate rival Tulane mid week before going to South Alabama and going 3-0 beating Alabama, Central Florida, and host South Alabama on Sunday. They climbed 8 spots very nice work from the Lions.

Another club off to a great start is Elon (5-2) who climbed all the way from #18 to the top 10 #9. After taking 2 of 3 from NC State to start the season this week the Phoenix got a mid week win over High Point before going to Florida and taking 2 of 3 from South Florida including the series clincher in 16 innings on Sunday.

Hawaii (3-4) has to be thinking what could have been. They took 2 of 3 from Oregon last weekend before finishing their 4 game series on Monday which Oregon won. Then the Rainbows welcomed Texas to town. Texas took the opener 2-0 and Hawaii took game 2 5-4 in 15 innings. In Sundays rubber match, Hawaii was down 4-2 going to bottom of the 9th and pushed across a run to make it 4-3 and still had bases loaded with 1 out but a line drive double play ended the ball game. That could be a season changer for Hawaii but they just dropped 1 spot for their 1-3 week to #12.

Charlotte (7-1) continues to play good baseball early taking 3 of 4 from Missouri and moves up 3 spots to #18. Kent St. (5-2) had a good week winning 2 games from both Winthrop and Wagner but remain at #23.

WCU (5-2) fell one spot to #15 after a 2-2 week where they gave Wake Forest a 2-1 10 inning win and needed a base hit in the bottom of 9th by freshman Gragg to win series vs Manhattan. WCU played first 2 games without its stud 2B Heffley (food poisoning) and welcomed him and his 2-2Bs and 4 RBIs back on Sunday.

Another SOCON club Georgia Southern (6-2) had a good week going 4-1 on week including a mid week split with Georgia Tech and sweeping NC Central moving up to #21. Setting up a big series next weekend when #8 St Johns comes to Statesboro in a series that both clubs would like to add to their hopeful postseason resume. Keep an eye on Soph OF Victor Roache who hit another HR Sunday to put him at .414/4/11 through 8 games.

Two clubs fell completely out of the top 25 this week. #9 UCONN (2-4) suffered another 1-2 week dropping a game to Oregon St and Indiana before beating Texas A&M CC on Sunday. I am sure we have not heard the last of UCONN but they just don’t deserve to be in top 25 right now. The team that helped drop UCONN out of top 25 was Troy(6-1) who enters the rankings at #25 after taking 2 of 3 from Southern Miss this weekend. That’s a team that wants to be in.

The other club that fell out of the rankings was #19 FGCU(3-4) who after splitting 4 games with Central Michigan at home dropped 2 of 3 at home to Illinois.

Now to one of the bigger stories of the weekend. San Jose St(6-1) jumps into the rankings at #19 after shocking the college baseball world and going to a CWS favorite and national ranked #1 UCLA and took 2 of 3 from the Bruins. Not much you can say about that but WOW.

I hope week 3 will be great of a week as this past week. By the way, is the reason we are seeing a lot of upsets because of the new bats or something else?

WCU,nFrom the Southland. If you have a 4-3 Northwestern State on the bubble, you should at least have a 6-2 Sam Houston State there and perhaps a 6-2 A&M Corpus Christi. Although I do not think Corpus will be there at the end, at this point they have beaten Texas and Oregon State.

Thanks. I saw your post on Rivals. Those clubs should definetly be on the list of bubbles and they are now.

Please stop referring to Louisiana-Lafayette as “Louisiana”. There is another school in the state with the same prefix (Louisiana-Monroe). By referring to Louisiana-Lafayette as “Louisiana” you are showing biased to a school in the same conference as Louisiana-Monroe.nnIt’s like calling Texas-Arlington “Texas”.

Actually, the school wants to be called Louisiana in Athletic releases.rnrnBrian FoleyrnSent on the Sprintu00ae Now Network from my BlackBerryu00ae

Like Brian said the school wants to be called Louisiana. Just like University of North Carolina at Charlotte does not want to be called UNCC but wants to be called Charlotte.
