We’re down to just four days until opening game for the 2011 Western Illinois Fighting Leatherneck baseball team. We finally hit the road and head to Birmingham to take on Samford University of the SoCon Conference. It will be nice to trade the winter coats and twelve inches of snow for sixty degrees and sunshine in Alabama.
However, sixty-degree weather will not be the only change for us. It will be nice to finally be back on a baseball field and ditch the walls of Western Hall, because as the season grows closer the anticipation of first pitch is almost unbearable. The team is getting antsy and cannot wait to finally see how we stack up against some of the finest competition in the nation.
The Summit League picked us to finish 5th in the league this year, and without a doubt that has us working harder than ever. Another fourteen-win season like 2010 is simply unacceptable. The coaching staff has us focused and poised to make a run for the Summit League Tournament. Throughout the time I have been part of this great organization, the Leathernecks have never given up, regardless of the tough times we have been through. I am sure that this year’s team will also bring that type of spirit and enthusiasm to this upcoming season. The boys in purple are ready. Are you?
