The season is right around the corner in less then two weeks so many teams are holding Alumni Games and scrimmages this weekend. Ole Miss, UCLA, and Cal-State Northridge each held their alumni games on Saturday while Alabama held a scrimmage.
Ole Miss 7 Ole Miss Alumni 0
OXFORD, Miss. – The inaugural Alumni Game at Ole Miss was dominated by pitching early, but a big fifth inning for the Rebels excited a crowd of roughly 1,000 people as the current Rebel squad defeated the alumni team by a score of 7-0 on Saturday.
It was a day of fun for all as the current professional players who comprised the alumni team were introduced prior to the game with video highlights of their careers at Ole Miss.
“What an exciting day for our program,” said Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco. “I was glad to see the weather clear up and that we had a good turn-out with our fans. This was a good day two-fold. It was good to welcome back the pro guys and see all of them, as well as getting to see a good effort from our team now with a lot of hits and runs scored.”
UCLA 8 UCLA Young Alumni 1
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA baseball team hosted its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, recording an 8-1 victory over the Alumni Team in the “Young-Timers” Game. Junior right-hander Trevor Bauer registered 11 strikeouts in six innings to lead the Bruins.
In all, UCLA welcomed back over 60 of its former baseball players. Prior to the “Young-Timers” game, a group of alumni from the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s played a three-inning “Old-Timers” Game. The home team prevailed in that contest, 14-2.
Cal-State Northridge 13 Alumni 0
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The hits just kept on coming at Matador Field on Saturday as the Cal State Northridge baseball team defeated their alumni brethren 13-0.
Sophomore pitcher Jacob Petersen started on the mound for the Matadors and set down the first 10 hitters he faced before surrendering a walk in four innings of work. Petersen also struck out three hitters on the day. Northridge did not give up a hit to the alumni team until there was one out in the sixth inning.
The scoring began for the current Matadors in the second inning as they put up eight runs on seven hits. Thirteen batters came up to the plate in a second inning that was fueled by junior Steven Keller’s two run double. The inning ended by mutual decision of the coaching staffs after Keller walked during his second time up to force in a run with two outs.
