The 2011 Collegiate Baseball Season Is Upon Us!
The Western Illinois Leathernecks will be writing a weekly journal throughout this upcoming season to keep you updated on our successes on and off the field. Last year was a rough season to say the least. Losing a head coach to leukemia and a pitcher to a motorcycle accident in the same year would cause a rough season at any university. Without a head coach throughout the entire fall, the team struggled to find an identity. Even with the work we put in after Christmas break, the lack of a fall season showed on the diamond. This year will be a different story.
The 2011 Leathernecks feature a ton a new faces and talent. With this being Coach Villano and Coach Coryell’s first full season at Western Illinois, we were able to get a lot accomplished throughout the fall and winter. The biggest change I noticed is the all around depth of our team, which provided a healthy level of competition throughout the fall games. Everyone has bought in and the program is moving in the right direction. With only a few more weeks left, excitement is building as the season opener nears and I know the boys in purple will be ready.
We will open the 2011 season at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama on February 18th, and from there making trips to Georgia State and Kansas State. It’ll be a good test to begin the season in order to see how our team stacks up. Word to the wise: DON’T SLEEP ON THE LEATHERNECKS THIS YEAR!
College baseball is here! I’m excited…You should be too!
Till next time.
