Update #2 at 12:00 AM on December 28th
There has been some more information to come out on this situation with Wittels. The incident took place on December 20th at the Atlantis Resort and Casino in the Bahamas. Two friends and Wittels were released on $10,000 bond after the court hearing last Thursday.
The young men will be back in court on April 18th in front of Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis for a preliminary hearing in the middle of the Golden Panthers season. It will be interesting to see how Coach Thomas deals with this distraction in the coming months.
FIU Athletic Director Pete Garcia released the following statement:“We will continue to gather any possible information as it becomes available.”
FIU Media Relations stated to CBD that they do not have anymore to say about the situation at this time.
Original Article
Florida International junior infielder Garrett Wittels was arrested and charged with rape of two 17 year old girls in the Bahamas. Wittels currently has a 56 game hitting streak which is the second longest NCAA hitting steak in history behind only Robin Ventura’s 58 game streak.
This is a huge blow to the Golden Panthers team as Wittels was expected to be one of the top hitters in the country in the upcoming season.
It hasn’t been announced yet but I would expect Wittels to be suspended until the situation gets settled. I am currently in the process of contacting FIU for official comment. If I get any update on his status it will be updated here.

Wow.
Interesting case!
Tragic as hell. I was looking forward to my son getting the chance to pitch to him. Hope this is not true.n KB
